Blog #2- Wiki Walk Through

Wiki Walk Through

What did you learn?

Upon visiting the TeachersFirst website, I was not sure how much more there was to learn about wikis. I was pleasantly surprised to find such a variety of ways that wikis could be used in the classroom! Especially for classrooms that work with older children, middle, or high school students, a wiki would be an extremely useful tool for the students to utilize. My favorite example was learning that the wiki could act as an interactive observation board or study guide. Students could share their findings, observations, or study techniques to the wiki.

How will you apply to your practice?

In the future, I plan to be teaching at the Prek-3rd grade level. In alignment with my beliefs about developmentally appropriate practice, I will not be recommending the children be involved in much screen-time participation with technology. However, I do hope to use technology to help document the children's ideas and plan to help them share these ideas as they get into second and third grade. With a wiki, we could record our observations as a class, especially in the science center.
I also think wikis could be a very helpful tool to use with parents. As a teacher, I could create a wiki for parents to share questions, ideas, or concerns. I could also use it as a sign-up for volunteer days or to gather information about cultural backgrounds and resources the families have.

After looking at this website, I feel very strongly about the importance of professional development for teachers with technology in the classroom. For many teachers, including me before this class, it is intimidating and overwhelming to view all of these new resources. It is helpful to have a website to break it down.
